Natural Dye Day – November 2, 2019
The Dye Study Group will be having a Natural Dye Day, focusing on colors ranging from reds to blues to purples. Some of the materials we will be using include elderberries, Oregon grape berries, madder root, logwood and possibly one or two others. Most of the dye baths will be made ahead of time.
When: Saturday November 2 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where: Paradise Fibers (upstairs in their dye room)
What to bring: Your lunch (a microwave is available), rubber gloves, apron or old shirt, marker, masking tape, scissors, notebook, chopsticks or tongs to handle yarn, several ounces of yarn or fiber (best if you can weigh out several pieces, a few ounces apiece, ahead of time to try out different dyes). Protein fibers work best. You are welcome to experiment with cellulose fibers, but they will not take the colors as deeply. Mordant your fiber ahead of time if you can, probably alum and cream of tartar are the best for these materials. Some mordants will be provided. Bring a few glass canning jars with lids to take dye home with you. Some dyes work better if the fiber is left in overnight. Bring a hot plate if you have one.
All other materials and handouts will be provided. Yarn and fiber is available for purchase at Paradise Fibers.
There is no cost for this Study Group session.
If you are not a member of the Dye Study Group, you are still welcome to attend, just let us know at secretary@spokaneweavers.org
